When Connecticut Surveying Might Be Needed
When you live in the state of Connecticut, you or your town may need surveying services at some point. Surveying often involves a combination of technical skills and legal knowledge, usually to determine a boundary or to map out a portion of land. On a technical level, surveying is the technique used for determining the two or three-dimensional positions of points on the Earth's surface and the angles between them. The lines of latitude and longitude are used as points of reference. On a basic level, these skills may be needed to determine a boundary between two Connecticut properties. On a more complex level, surveying in Connecticut is needed for mapping of land, wetlands, utility lines, and right of way.
Aside from the technical aspects of surveying, the field often requires legal knowledge. A surveyor determining a boundary, for example, may need to consult documentation on the property. Such documentation may indicate the original property line designation. In addition to seeking out and examining legal documentation, a surveyor may also gather information about the property through observations, measurements, questionnaires, research, and data analysis.
Surveying of any area, including the varied terrain of Connecticut, is a time-consuming process, but newer technology, such as three-dimensional laser scanning, speeds this up. Laser scanning captures an area or object much faster than through man power and is helpful in mapping complex and inaccessible areas and surfaces. A laser scanner emits a pulse of light in the direction of an object or surface and measures the time the pulse takes to return. This amount serves as a point of distance on the object, and the scanner maps it out on a three-dimensional graph. The thousands of pulses sent out in the direction of the object create a point cloud and are assembled into a three-dimensional image. This image, then, is helpful for creating two-dimensional drawings of the image.
Connecticut surveying, no matter for private or public projects, is needed for a variety of reasons. An individual or town may need a property or boundary survey; a topographical or photogrammetric survey; an ALTA/ACSM land title survey; residential or construction projects; subdivision design and planning; land title research; wetlands, utility, or right of way mapping; and monumentation.
